MAN OF THE YEAR

Donu Kogbara
As 2011 draws to a close, it seems appropriate to look back in anger or approval at some of the people who have, individually or as part of groups, made the past l2 months better or worse in various ways and in various parts of the world.

Several commentators of all nationalities have concluded that the Man Of The Year award should, without a shadow of doubt, go to Mohamed Bouazizi, the 26 year-old Tunisian street vendor and fruit seller whose desperation-driven self-immolation sparked off widespread riots and led to the Arab Spring.
*Mohamed Bouazizi
Having said more than once on this page that it is preferable (in my opinion) to die on your feet than to live on your knees, I totally agree with pundits who say that Bouazizi is a hero and major catalyst who deserves maximum recognition.
So, yes, it is tragic that the young man killed himself. And I really wish that he hadn’t, given that his religion regards suicide as a sin and that most clouds have silver linings, even if these silver linings aren’t immediately visible.
It is entirely possible that Bouazizi’s existence would have greatly improved over time if he had gritted his teeth and soldiered on. But there is no use crying over spilled milk, especially since his action has had such a positive impact.
Bouazizi was emotionally disorientated by the trials and tribulations he had endured and could not see any light at the end of the tunnel; and despair is extremely hard to shake off and the bottom line is that his decision to dramatically exit from circumstances he found intolerable has not been in vain.
By dying, he gave life with a capital L to a movement that will go down in history as epoch-changing.  Thanks to Bouazizi, the dormant fury of millions of oppressed North African and Middle Eastern citizens was awakened. Thanks to him, three dictators were unceremoniously thrown out of their presidential palaces. Thanks to him, other klepto psychos – Bashar Al-Assad of Syria, for example – can no longer sit comfortably on their thrones and are battling for survival.
A Tunisian square has been named after Mohamed Bouazizi. A postage stamp has been issued in Mohamed Bouazizi’s honour. Mohamed Bouazizi has been posthumously awarded the Sakharov Prize. We will never forget his name.
May he be forgiven for extinguishing the life God gave him. May he rest in peace and continue to inspire those who need to fight tyrants and thieves.
Congrats also to…
Barack Obama, for stylishly coping with constant attacks from dim-witted racists who keep searching for excuses to embarrass him because they can’t bear the thought of a black President. Someone should tell these bigoted morons that the “White House” was so named because of the colour the building was painted and NOT because it was only meant to be inhabited by white ogas!

David Cameron, the British Prime Minister, for refusing to be bullied into slavishly doing everything that devotees of the failed Eurozone feel he should do. Cameron’s courageous stance has made him more popular on his home turf.
I cannot think of a single Nigerian Government official who has achieved enough in 2011 to be lavishly praised. But I am convinced that Ekiti State indigenes are very lucky to have a Governor of Kayode Fayemi’s calibre.
Ekiti is one of the poorest states in the Federation, so Fayemi has big mountains to climb. But money is not everything (which is why our oil-producing states do not look like Texas, despite collecting billions of naira worth of revenue annually); and I am pretty certain that Fayemi will, by the end of his tenure, have proved that great strides can be made by any leader who isn’t puffed up with conceit and possesses honesty, brains, imagination, vision and commitment.
I’m also hearing – from decent sources – that Rochas Okorocha, the new-ish Imo State Governor, is outshining Udenwa and Ohakim, his awful predecessors. My mother is from Imo, so I have a personal interest in Imo’s problems and progress; and I pray that Okorocha goes from strength to strength.
Miracle
If you can find a bookshop that stocks it, please get hold of “Miracle”. It is a beautifully written short story by Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie, the award-winning novelist; and it subtly highlights so many issues and attitudes that make Nigeria what it is. I particularly enjoyed Adichie’s gentle but searing focus on hypocrisy.
From the mail box
Last but not least is Stella Ogedegbe (jitelle2@yahoo.com). Of all the letters I have received from Vanguard readers this year, hers was my favourite:

Dear DK,
As much as the Nigerian elites have their large share of blame for the current situation in the Nation, I would very much want to use this forum to strongly encourage our youths to wake up from their  mental and physical laziness; which is commonly found among our youths both in the cities and rural communities.
In the past we used to have brilliant pupils / students from remote and rural communities, who win educational awards and gain scholarships into higher institutions. Most of those kids studied under harsh conditions with basic/skeletal educational facilities.
The point being made here is, parents generally (and especially those who can’t afford expensive schools) should endeavour to help and encourage their kids/wards to love the art of reading for “knowledge unfits a child to be a slave”, even slavery of any form; enlightened VIP kids are also involved in cult activities and other activities that are not mentally helpful.
If the minds of these youths are geared towards acquiring knowledge at whatever level whether in conducive environments or not, they will not be easily motivated to become Militants or be involved in Boko Haram activities.
What beats me about the present crop of Nigerian VIPs is that they are all beneficiaries of good public educational and health facilities as far back as the 60s and 70s, why can’t they improve on the systems they inherited from or at least maintain the standards… Why destroy the systems that they gained from?
Jite Ogedegbe, Warri.

Police humiliates Sunny Neji, undresses him in public @ gunpoint’

Popular pop highlife star and Oruka crooner Sunny Neji, is a man in pain. He is so angry at the humiliation meted out to him by men of the Nigerian Police Force that he decided to twit and share his experience on Facebook.
Following his post published herein, our reporter MUKOSOLU NZOM had a brief chat with the Ogoja, Cross River State born star.
Excerpt: I saw what you up loaded just now, what happened?

*Sunny Neji
Some policemen in uniform stopped me and started searching me as if I was a criminal.
And where did this happen?
It happened around the toll gate axis on Lagos Ibadan express way by 7-UP area, between 10 and 11 of that faithful morning. The officer in-charge of the team was one Inspector Katsina…and they were driving a convoy Hilux truck
How did it happen?
I was asked to stop and I did. And they started treating me as if I was already guilty of something. The inspector kept ranting about how they’ll deal with me if they found anything incriminating in my car. They searched the whole car and made me remove my shoes and my jacket. I  wondered at their effrontery and what they were looking for.
They even went as far as asking for my Special Marshal I.D card.  They just kept talking as if they were sure there was something in my car.
They turned my car inside out….I did not mind the searching but all the threats they were making as if they were so sure I was guilty even before finding any evidence made me uncomfortable
I think the Police can do better than what they did to me.
Don’t  you think they did that because they  wanted you to part with some money?
They intentionally did what they did because they wanted to embarrass me. I’m sure my name is not very strange to them.
And after the search, were you allowed to go?
They had to leave me now abi …….since they did not find anything. I’m not a criminal, it was pure police harassment
Worried that the same situation may arise next time,  Nneji told Sunday Entertainment, that he decided to visit the station (Area H in Ogudu.)where the team works and this is what he said transpired.
”I decided to visit the area command where those officers came from to report the incident…”
“My peeps!!!!! No be small tin o….na so I go station this morning go sit down face to face wit the officers wey harass me the other day. They come dey beg dey apologize. The transformation was incredible. The 2IC ask me Wetin I want make dem do to dem….I look dem finish and I come begin sorry for dem. I say make dem just caution dem…. E go better!!!”.

Mercy Johnson is Google Most Searched Celebrity in Nigeria.

One actress who made so much news in the year 2011 is delectable screen goddess, Mercy Johnson.
The year was really wonderful for the Kogi State born actress as she remained number one choice in Nollywood from Asaba, Enugu, Lagos, to Abuja and beyond,  gracing posters covers  and movie jackets.

*Mercy Johnson
In the year under review, she got married and was adjudged the best actress at the Afro-Australian Music and Movies Award (AAMMA) which is the only African award event in the whole of Australia and New Zealand. The award recognized Mercy Johnson as Africa’s Queen of the screen which is a symbolic recognition.
The award was held at the Emmore Theatre in Sydney, Australia. Though Mercy Johnson was regrettably absent at the awards due to mixed up flight logistics beyond her control,  another Nollywood star, Desmond Elliot received the award on her behalf.
The icing on the cake for  MJ as she is most fondly called by fans, is her emergence as the most ‘goggled’ Nigerian celebrity on the popular search engine,  Google.
According to Google statistics, Mercy Johnson was the most searched Nigerian celebrity on the internet. She was beaten to the third place by Facebook, the social networking site, which came first and 2go, a mobile messenger that allows one to chat with friends for free.
Apart from playing lead roles in big budget movies and acting in more than a dozen movies during the year, her controversial wedding in August made headlines.
The actress who made her movie debut in ‘’The Maid” years ago, has appeared in over 100 movies and has other notable awards to her credit.

Following media reports that the trio of, Tuface, Wizkid and P-Sqaure have been signed on to Akon’s Konvict Music, Tuface has debunked the story, saying it is false.

Speaking through his media man Bayo Omisere, Tuface said although he has maintained a fantastic relationship with Akon, there is however no existing contract whatsoever between them.

6 Steps to checking 2011 WAEC GCE Results

Step 1: Identifying yourself: Supply your 10-digit WAEC GCE 2011 Examination Number. (ie. your 7-Digit centre number followed by your 3-digit candidateseat number eg. 4123456789)

Step 2: Tell WAEC that your examination year is 2011. However you can type in other years if you are not checking for 2011.

Step 3: Select the type of examination you sat for. For GCE, choose Nov/Dec. or do otherwise if you wrote internal exam.

Step 4: Enter the Card Serial Number found on the reverse side of your Scratch card.

Step 5: Enter the Personal Identification Number (PIN) on your Scratch card

Step 6: Click "Submit" and wait for your GCE results window to come up.
How to check your WAEC result on a mobile phone
You can check your WAEC result via SMS. To check your WAEC GCE Nov/Dec 2011 with a mobile phone, you will need to buy the WAEC Direct Scratch card for N350. Simply send a short code in this format:
WAEC*ExamNo*PIN*ExamYear to 32327 . For example, if your WAEC Examination number is 42966731, your PIN is 123456, and you sat for WAEC GCE in 2011, send WAEC*42966731*123456*2011 to 32327 . The WAEC SMS result checking service costs N30 per SMS and is available only on Glo, Airtel, and MTN networks.
Sending your WAEC result toyour email
With the result checker function at the WAEC Direct website, you can send a copy of your WAEC result to your email address. This will make it easily accessible whenever you need it. My advise is that you send a copy to your email address when checking yourWAEC GCE/SSCE result at the WAECresult checker portal. This is because you have only 5 access to your WAEC result per scratch card. Sending a copy to your email means you can access it as many times as you want via your email.

To send your WAEC result to your email, select the Send results to Email option on WAEC result checker, after you have logged inand enter your email address andclick submit. A copy of your WAEC result will be sent to your email address.

THE RICHEST ACTRESS IN NIGERIA

When the industry started years back many folks did not take it serious. But what was seen as a joke has now turned out to be the jewel that is driving Nigeria and the entire Africa to find their footage in the world. Within the past twenty years the make believe industry called nollywood has helped to define and sell Nigeria afresh to the world. Nollywood has provided thousands of jobs for citizens and non-citizens alike and have made many rich. Nollywood is indeed a testimony that Nigeria and Africa should not be written off.

The industry has given the entire nation a face, a real identity and now the rest of the world has no choice but to take Nigeria a little bit serious. As the industry continues to gain momentum and worldwide recognition, there are some actresses who have paid the price and at the same time have become famous, powerful and forces to reckon with in the society. We can conclude that they are shining, rising, reigning and recognized. Even in the mist of the African dilemma ‘’failure’’ their lifestyle have revealed glamour and glitz. Although they are far from being perfect, they have indeed persevered. From the beginning the actresses had shown passion for what they had set out their hearts to do and become. Today they have become inspiration to the new generation in Nigeria and Africa.

They are elegant, sizzling, bold and beautiful. They are the sum total of the African woman. What has separated the best from the rest and the leaders from the less is nothing but business inventory and diversity, creativity and learning about surrounding opportunities. I am hereby delighted to present to you the richest and most powerful actresses in nollywood at the moment. Compared to their counterparts in Bollywood and Hollywood, the actresses may be nowhere, but the truth of the matter is that they are heading somewhere greater.

You can call it subtle enmity, if you like. But the truth remains that some of our leading pastors are not the best of friends. Not only do they not talk, they readily abuse themselves whenever time permits. Come with us, and let us unmask these preachers of the word as well as serve you the genesis of all their quarrel.
